Dr Girdhar J Gyani, Director General, Association of Healthcare Providers in India (AHPI)

Dr. Girdhar J. Gyani is a renowned healthcare expert and advocate for quality healthcare services in India. As the Director General of the Association of Healthcare Providers in India (AHPI), he leads a conglomerate of healthcare providers working towards Universal Health Coverage, with a focus on patient safety and affordability. Prior to his current role, Dr. Gyani served as Secretary General of the Quality Council of India (QCI) from 2003 to 2012, where he established and operated national accreditation structures, promoting quality in various sectors, including manufacturing, education, and healthcare.

Under his leadership, QCI grew from a team of four to a nationally recognized organization, playing a key role in facilitating quality as a national framework. Dr. Gyani has the rare distinction of serving as an elected director on the board of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) from 2004 to 2010. He worked extensively on improving the effectiveness of quality certification processes and has published findings in prominent international quality journals.

Dr. Gyani’s contributions to healthcare quality are immense. He founded the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) and served as its CEO until 2012, accrediting over 200 leading hospitals and boosting medical tourism. He also improved patient safety indicators in several states, including Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and NCR Delhi, through capacity-building measures.

Dr. Gyani has been instrumental in formulating and operating accreditation standards for hospitals, schools, and environmental impact assessments. Based on a task assigned by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, then President of India, Dr. Gyani evolved the quality accreditation standard for schools, defining quality governance for holistic student development.

A highly acclaimed expert, Dr. Gyani holds a Doctorate degree in Quality and has received numerous awards, including the ’16th Lal C. Verman Award’ in 2002 and ‘Rotary Centenary Award’ in 2004 for Excellence in Quality. He was recognized as ‘Quality Man of India’ by SME World Magazine and ‘CHANKYA of Quality’ by Healthcare Executive magazine. Dr. Gyani also received the ‘Lifetime achievement award’ jointly by DRDO, Vivekananda Yoga University, and Foundation for Quality in 2015 and the Consortium of Accredited Hospitals (CAHO) ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2016.

Dr. Gyani served as an elected director on the board of the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) from 2009 to 2014 and is currently a surveyor for ISQua’s international accreditation program. He was a nominated member of the academic council of the Medical Council of India (MCI) from 2012 to 2013. Dr. Gyani is a member of the Advisory, Quality and Accreditation Institute and has worked extensively with various state governments and healthcare organizations to improve quality and patient safety.
